The Alexandria Preservation Trust is a private organization founded
for the general purpose of promoting awareness and preservation of
Alexandria's cultural heritage, ancient and modern, with a special
emphasis on the built environment.
Scope of Activities
Research and Documentation:
Since the mid-1980s the Trust has been engaged in documenting the
monuments and buildings of historical and architectural value
throughout Alexandria. Information on archaeological sites has been
gathered, new developments are monitored and campaigns mounted to
force preservation issues onto the public agenda. A contemporary
resource of detailed plans, drawings and photo documentation provides
a comprehensive listing of both the Ottoman and Cosmopolitan segments
of the city. The classification is chronological, geographical and
architectural for individual buildings and general areas, with a
hierarchical grading relating to a site's significance on the
national, city or locality level.
Publications:
The core research provides a basis for publications (maps, monographs,
general studies) on historical, cultural and preservation themes.
Lectures:
The Trust delivers lectures on Alexandria's heritage and leads guided
explorations of the present-day city, highlighting teh architecture of
the 19th and 20th centuries.
The Trust's Collection:
The Trust possesses an important collection of books, maps, engravings
and photographs relating to Alexandria, with a particular
concentration on the 19th and 20th centuries. New aquisitions are
regularly added and the collection offers a valuable resource to any
researcher studying the history and development of the city.
